Church of the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ

Church of the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ

Risen from the Ashes

Today’s Church of the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ (Crkva Svetog Sretenja Gospodnjeg) was built in the Byzantine style in 1796 during the time of Metropolitan Stratimirović. Before this church, there was the church of St. Clement built in 1756. Of the previous wooden church, only the archbishop’s throne with the icon of Christ with a frame in the Rococo style has been preserved. Today it is in a very good condition.

The iconostasis was created from 1818-1832. The carver of the iconostasis, the archbishop’s throne and the petohlebnica was Marko Vujatović, while the iconostasis was painted by Georgije Bakalović. He also painted the icon on the archbishop’s throne.

The throne of the Mother of God, with carvings of Baroque forms and icons of Christ, was created in the second half of the 18th century. The throne icons are separated by fluted pillars surrounded by twigs with oak leaves and roses. The most common motifs are vines with grapes, acanthus leaves, vases placed upside down, with roses with twigs that bend into volutes on both sides.

There was an unprecedented storm on Ivandan and the church tower was demolished. The new tower was built in 1901. The Germans mined it in 1943, but only the bells fell from the church. The new ones were built in 1956.

Among the church books there is a Serb from Russia (1760).

The church has been declared a cultural monument.
